This was a role Ingrid had wanted to play for years, and she would play it three times: in this film, on the stage in the 50's under the direction of Rossellini, and in a filmed version of the oratorio (Giovanna d'Arco al rogo (1954)), also directed by Rossellini.

Plot Summary: It is the time of the Hundred Years War between England and France. The war is going badly for France, who cannot crown its king because the royal city is in the hands of the English. A fourteen year old named Joan has been hearing voices that call her to a great future, leading the French to victory. She obtains an audience with the Dauphin, who sends her to his army. She leads them in a stunning series of victories which bring the royal city back to French control and the king is crowned. But, she is betrayed to the English who try her for heresy in a mock religious court and sentence her to be burned at the stake for refusing to submit to them.
